Do we need the guide too?
Yes. The notebooks follow the guide chapter for chapter, with open prompts on each of its 51 conversations. Paperback + Notebooks and the Couple Set both include it.
Why two notebooks?
They're sold as a pair, because the whole point is two people answering on their own.
